about hypnobirthing
The word is a little confusing isn’t it? Maybe it’s led you to believe you are going to be hypnotised or it’s an alternative method of birthing. I can reassure you, it is neither of these.
Whether you are planning a labour ward or birth centre birth, a home birth, an induction of labour, a caesarean birth or a free birth - hypnobirthing is for you.
The "Hypno" part relates to the use of hypnotherapy techniques (nothing like stage hypnosis) to help you understand how your mindset can impact your body during labour. To put it simply, if you feel fearful, the body reverts to the sympathetic nervous, ‘fight or flight’ response in order to protect you. This interrupts the hormones that are required for birth. A person must feel calm and safe for the amazing cocktail of hormones to work effectively. The techniques I share and tracks you get to listen to help your mindset throughout pregnancy, to overcome fear and feel calm and confident on the day so that you can switch off your thinking brain and tune into your body.
The "Birthing" part of the word relates to it being an antenatal course. I will help you understand birth, how it might feel and your baby’s journey as well as the system we birth in (NHS) and the options you have. This course is about gaining knowledge to help you make informed decisions and provide you and your birth partner with practical strategies for managing every stage of your birth experience.
The benefits of Hypnobirthing
Hypnobirthing works on the principle that the more calm and safe the birthing person feels in labour, the more their essential birth hormones are able to work effectively. Clinical research shows that using Hypnobirthing techniques in childbirth results in:
Reduced sensation of pain
Shorter labour and less intervention.
Whilst these statistics are important, it is the emotional benefits of a positive birth experience that have a lasting impact.
